Yes We Can, Deliver Healthier Babies!
"To be frank, the U.S. maternity care system needs to be turned upside down. Midwives should be caring for the majority of pregnant women, and physicians should continue to handle high-risk cases, complications and emergencies. This is the division of labor, so to speak, that you find in the countries that spend less but get more." LA Times December 24, 2008

It makes perfect sense.
That the two competing resolutions for this coming new year are:
1. lose weight
2. learn to make some bad ass donuts
It's also quite the cop out as I started this new year on September 29th.
Well, I am large and I surely contain multitudes.

Toronado increases San Diego's chances of surviving the end of days.

Working up in the bay area on occasion my boys Benny "fuck processed soy products" Runkle and Peter "No Meater" Tappiner would take me to the venerable Toronado bar in the Haight.
It was love at first draft.
To my great and recent surprise a new Toronado opened up but three short and thirsty blocks from my bungalow and the pleasure has been all mine.
The beer is wonderful and plenty, the sausage perfect and cheap. I love it.
Try it and you will too.

Halloween.

Haven't posted in a long time. Hopefully after tomorrow will post some celebratory words and photo's. Until then here's a photo from Halloween. My darling Melissa and her friends Emma and Naya organized their second non corporate non candy Halloween bash with yum food, a puppet show, music and lot's of little monkey's dancing about. Lotsa fun.

A question of Morels.
On a recent visit to Whole Paycheck in Hillcrest I happened about the newly fashioned "Truffle" section. Rummaging through containers of various mushrooms I noticed a box of morels that were mislabel as shitake. Price of shitakes? About 23 bucks a lb. Price of morels? About 300 bucks a lb. So here was roughly 13 dollars worth of morels listed at 92 cents. What did I do? I bought them of course! For now I can not only enjoy the deliciousness of Barbara Kingsolver's morel and asparagus bread pudding recipe but I can take joy in knowing that it is being subsidized by my most hated purveyor of all things natural and expensive.
What would Jesus have done? I don't know, I'm Jewish, but let me know what you would do by voting in the poll above.

Breakfast, or lack thereof.
There is a breakfast crisis in SD in my humble opinion. Mission gets the job done but that's not saying much. Urban Solace has saved a day with sunday brunch (the biscuits and gravy are bleeping awesome), but thats just one day!
I think I may start a campaign to pressure the Linkery into doing breakfast, at least start with a weekend brunch, come on! Pastured eggs, amazing sausage, the best pork in town. Tilth does breakfast and they don't even have to, Seattle has ton's of good morning food.
Jay, we need you to step up dude.
I'll wait till the new location is settled into, then bam! 1000 signatures demanding (more like begging) gravy and beer.
This is my plan.
p.s. had brunch at urban solace the day after this post and it was awesome. their bacon is superb and the biscuits and gravy are some of the best I've ever had. if they upgraded their coffee it would be the cherry. a nice french press with some beans from santos or moto.
